The Kodidoddi Community Centre is conceived as a ‘familiar, everyday space’ to the village community. It is recognised that the mundane conversations and events is rather what that develops into the foundations for a community’s harmony and sense of belonging, therefore creating a space for all and for one is pivotal for the project to thrive. Referencing back to traditional homes and streets of the locality, courtyards, verandahs and alleys are created in varying proportions to facilitate dynamic activities.
At the crux of this proposal, the community centre is imagined as a prototype module of core programs and additional program that may be specific to various sites. The multi-purpose hall (Served), store+toilet facility (Service) and Tree (Place-maker) become primary ‘kit of parts’ to the module. The same pattern can be horizontally or vertically multiplied based on requirement.
Additionally, sustainable construction system that use local material, easy and quick construction with less demand to specific skilled labour makes it a viable option to replicate.
In order to create ownership to place, the project is conceived as phase one and two, the multi-purpose hall shall be used as a think tank for the community during phase 1 where the design proposal for phase 2 is exhibited along with other key design proposals of this competition. Through a participatory process of negotiations, a comprehensive phase 2 shall be built. The community can also volunteer for the construction of the compound wall using earth bags meanwhile. This process shall also help in creating strong self help groups within the village who can help manage the centre in the long term.
